Artifacts: Internet Safety and Tools of the Future
I have selected the blog post “Internet Safety and Tools of the future”form ITEC 7430 as the artifact for standard 4.2. For this artifact I focused on the need for digital citizenship in schools, research from several websites on Digital Citizenship that my district had been looking at, and how my district planned on implementing digital citizenship with students.
This artifact explains my ability to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies because it reflects how I am able to teach appropriate use of digital citizenship resources and tools to teachers and students. Digital Citizenship is a very broad subject that covers topics from proper email use to evaluating websites. I made the conscious choice to lean heavy on the Common Sense Media materials for my district. Badges, certifications, materials, lesson plans, and more are already pre-built for my teachers. I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel and their content is research based and more comprehensive than what I could make on my own.
I learned a great deal about digital citizenship as it pertains to specific grade levels. The most important lesson that I learned was that most teachers are already integrating digital citizenship in their classrooms without thinking about it. This is important because many teachers assume that teaching Digital Citizenship is “one more thing;” however, once they understand that they are already doing it, they become much more receptive.
This artifact has made a great impact on our schools because teachers were excited about getting their school digital citizenship certified and having a platform already built to model and facilitate how to use technology. If an issue arises in the classroom, the teacher now has a resource to review the Cyberbullying and Digital Drama Unit with a class. Having an on demand resource to meet the needs of a teacher is powerful for valuing a teacher’s time and meeting the needs of students.
