Artifacts: #FloydPLN Chat on Twitter
The artifact included for Standard 3.7 is a link to the Floyd County Schools bi-monthly Twitter Chat. Our district has seen a significant increase in users on Twitter to learn more about pedagogical skills and share the events from their classrooms and schools. Previously, I had been tagging technology Tweets with #fcsdot, but I approached my Director of Technology with the idea of using #FloydPLN on Twitter for a Twitter chat and for creating a universal hashtag that stakeholders could use.
Twitter chats are an important digital communication resource and represents digital collaboration from within our district and outside our district. This resource serves as a regular form of communication for intradistrict and interdistrict initiatives. We have several teachers, administrators, and instructional technologists from across the state that join our Twitter chats. Twitter chats have undoubtedly served as another vital digital communication and collaboration tool that facilitates interaction with students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
I learned a lot by participating in various Twitter chats. We originally modeled the #FloydPLN chat after #ForsythPLN due to its success. This gave us a firm foundation for beginning our Twitter chat. Because a Twitter chat is not a “one and done” artifact, we are constantly looking at various ways to attract more people and reach a broader crowd. In the future, we are looking forward to bringing in guest moderators and coordinating with various district initiatives, like professional learning communities.
This artifact mainly affected school improvement and faculty development. Teachers and administrators now can use #FloydPLN to join a Twitter chat and to tag their own Tweets. Being a district with 22 campuses and 10,000 students, our teachers are spread thin and typically do not have day to day contact with someone that they can collaborate with. Twitter and the hashtag #FloydPLN allow teachers to collaborate across our district and at their convenience. The impact can be assessed by the number of people that are active in the Twitter chat, the number of Tweets using #FloydPLN, and the content of the posts that use #FloydPLN.
